About the skit
Youth group is over, and Katie walks in laughing at something on her phone. She stays to pray out loud: the verse this week is Romans 5:8, Pastor Dave said to be honest with God, and she has a color-coded list. One by one she calls up the kids who made her life miserable. Cole told everybody on the bus she cried at the dog movie, Aubrey has called her “Extra Credit” for two years, and then there’s Trey.
“I’m not arguing with You about everybody,” she tells God. “I’m arguing about this one.” Then she asks God to show her what He sees, and her prayer gets an answer she didn’t ask for. By the end she reads the verse on the whiteboard again as if she’d never seen it.
Five teens, about six minutes and one rehearsal; Katie keeps most of her lines in the prayer journal she holds. It works any time of year in youth group, on a Holy Week youth night or before a message on grace or bullying. The staging notes cover making sure the congregation sees what Katie doesn’t, casting with care, and what leaders should say to teens who are being bullied.

(KATIE comes in laughing at her phone, her prayer journal under her arm. She stops down front and talks to the congregation like they're her friends, holding the phone out to the front row.)
KATIE: Okay, you have to see this. Somebody got a picture of Wes at lunch and made it a meme. (She laughs.) It's so mean. (She tips her head toward the corner and drops her voice.) That's him. Don't look. (In the corner, WES looks up from his phone.) He can't hear, he's got his earbuds in. (She moves the phone along the front row, laughing harder. WES watches it go along the row.) It's so mean.
(KATIE puts her phone in her pocket and turns to the whiteboard. Behind her back, WES pulls his hood up and looks at the floor. He doesn't take out his earbuds.)
KATIE: (reading) "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." (to the congregation) That's our verse this week. And Pastor Dave said, "This week, be honest with God." (beat) He's gonna regret that.
(She sits, opens her journal and closes her eyes. Then she opens them and talks to God, up and out over the congregation.)
KATIE: Hi. It's Katie. I read Your verse. "While we were yet sinners." Okay. But some sinners are, like, regular. And some are a lot. So I have a few questions about who exactly Jesus died for. (She turns a page.) I made a list. It's color-coded. (beat) Let's start with the worst.
(Without looking, she points over her shoulder.)
KATIE: Cole.
(COLE stands and turns around, hands in his pockets.)
COLE: Is this a trial?
KATIE: It's a prayer.
COLE: It feels like a trial.
KATIE: (to God) Sixth grade. The bus. He told everybody I cried at the dog movie.
COLE: You did cry at the dog movie.
KATIE: Everybody cried at the dog movie! The dog was old!
COLE: I didn't cry.
KATIE: You were eating the whole time. (to God) Three years, God. Every time the bus passes a dog: "Katie, you okay?"
COLE: (shrugging) It's a little funny.
