About the skit

Neil drops everything into the Give Away box, and Beth takes it right back out. Their dad labeled the label maker, sorted forty years of screws by size and kept every church directory since 1991. Neil, who hadn’t spoken to him in six years, wants it done by noon. Then Gene, who went on every church work trip with Ray for thirty years, stops by for the team’s toolbag and looks in the boxes.

Ray carried a battered canteen on every one of those trips and never once drank out of it. Something rustles inside. Neil reads what he finds out loud, one line at a time, and the jokes stop there. Before Gene goes, he says the verse Ray always said when one of the old crew passed on, 1 Thessalonians 4:13–14, and the skit ends where it began, with two small words that mean something new.

It fits Easter weekend, a service where your church remembers members who died this year, or a grief support group. Three adults, any mix of men and women, and one walk-through, with the lines taped inside the box flaps. The staging notes cover making the prop Neil reads from live, where the humor has to stop, and telling anyone who has lost a parent this year before Sunday.

NEIL: Beth. He labeled the label maker.

BETH: That's why we keep it.

NEIL: (the coffee can) Screws.

BETH: Forty years of screws.

NEIL: That's why we give them away.

BETH: (taking the can back) They're sorted by size.

NEIL: (the directories) Every church directory since 1991.

BETH: He's in all of them.

NEIL: Same picture since 1998.

BETH: It was a good picture.

NEIL: Beth, I want this done by noon.

BETH: It's a whole garage, Neil.

NEIL: Then we'd better go faster. (picking up the work boots) Give away.

BETH: Keep.

NEIL: You're going to wear Dad's work boots?

BETH: I'm going to look at them.
