About the skit

The ham is a ham, the shepherds’ bathrobes are at the dry cleaner’s, Pastor wants a hundred more candles, and the nursery has two volunteers for nineteen babies. Pam and Kathy handle all of it, one buzzing phone at a time.

Every one of Kathy’s lists ends with the same line: “Read Luke 2. Later.” When the last casserole is labeled and the two of them finally sit down, Pam asks a question neither of them can answer, until Kathy reaches into her purse.

Two actors, written for women and easy to play as two men or a mixed pair. The first three minutes are fast and the ending is slow. No sound tech needed: the actors play every phone buzz.

Read the first page

(Lights up. PAM is hanging garland on the tree. KATHY sits at the table labeling casseroles with a marker. Both phones lie on the table. Both buzz.)

PAM: Is that yours or mine?

KATHY: It's the Hospitality Team group text. It's everybody's.

PAM: (checking her phone) Gary wants to know if the ham is spiral-cut.

KATHY: Tell Gary the ham is a ham.

(KATHY's phone buzzes. She reads.)

KATHY: Linda says the shepherds' bathrobes are at the dry cleaner's. And the dry cleaner's is closed.

PAM: The shepherds can be in their pajamas. It's very authentic.

(KATHY picks up the little Advent booklet from the table.)

KATHY: Pam. We said we'd do the Advent devotional together this year.

PAM: And we did!

KATHY: We did Day One.

PAM: Day One was very good.

KATHY: It's December twenty-third.

PAM: We'll catch up. After Christmas. (She looks at the garland.) Is this straight?

KATHY: No.

PAM: It's straight enough.
