About the skit

Linda has eleven shepherds, four bathrobes and a star that won’t stop blinking. When a young mother with a baby comes in looking for somewhere warm to wait, Linda is far too busy getting Christmas ready to really see her.

The first half is comedy your congregation will recognize: a sound volunteer losing a fight with an extension cord, a longtime member armed with snickerdoodles, a sheep whose ear won’t stay on. Then the room goes quiet, and the skit lands on Luke 2:7 without a sermon.

It works with a small cast and almost no set: a table, a manger and one chair. Names and genders are easy to change, and the staging notes cover what to do if your child actor is out sick.

(Lights up. LINDA paces, phone to her ear, clipboard in hand. GREG stands on the step stool, tangled in a string of lights. The star above the manger blinks on and off.)

LINDA: (into phone) No, Pastor Mike, everything is under control. (GREG drops the cord with a clatter.) Mostly under control. (She hangs up.) Greg! Why is the star blinking?

GREG: It's festive.

LINDA: It's blinking in Morse code. I'm pretty sure it's spelling "help."

GREG: Then it's festive and honest.

(MRS. PATTERSON enters carrying a plate of cookies.)

MRS. PATTERSON: I brought snickerdoodles. Nobody ever had a bad rehearsal with snickerdoodles.

LINDA: Mrs. Patterson, we don't have time for snickerdoodles. We have eleven shepherds and four bathrobes.

(SAM enters in a sheep costume, holding a floppy ear in one hand.)

SAM: Miss Linda? My ear fell off.

LINDA: (without looking up) Tape.

SAM: I already used tape.

LINDA: More tape.
