About the skit
Jake was planning to see the stars in the picture he’d send his friend. Grandpa has other plans. He takes Jake out back the way his own dad took him every Christmas Eve, out past Hays, Kansas, where there were no lights for twenty miles.
When Grandpa switches off the porch light, the skit slows down. There’s a verse his father said every year, the story of the wise men and whom they found, and a way of pointing at the sky that gets passed down one more time.
Two or three actors, ideally a real grandparent and grandchild from your church. The staging notes cover the lights, the phone and a version with Grandma in the lead.

(Lights up on the porch. The lamp is on. GRANDPA comes out in a coat and a knit hat with a big pom-pom, carrying a blanket. JAKE follows, face lit by the phone.)
GRANDPA: Come on. Five minutes.
JAKE: It's twenty-eight degrees.
GRANDPA: Then put your hat on.
JAKE: Nobody said anything about outside.
(GRANDPA takes off the pom-pom hat and puts it on JAKE's head.)
GRANDPA: There.
JAKE: (feeling the top of it) It has a ball on it.
GRANDPA: Your grandmother knitted that ball.
JAKE: (resigned) It's a great ball.
(They sit on the bench. GRANDPA spreads the blanket over both their knees. JAKE holds the phone up toward the sky, turning it slowly.)
GRANDPA: What are you doing?
JAKE: Star app. You point it at the sky, and it tells you what everything is.
GRANDPA: And?
JAKE: (reading) It says the brightest thing up there is... a plane to Denver.
GRANDPA: Well. It's not wrong.
