About the skit

It’s Saturday night in the sanctuary, and Lorraine has counted the Easter lilies: forty-six. The bulletin lists forty-seven, and Nancy proofread it herself, three times. Doug sneezes over the lilies, the whole committee says “Bless you” without looking up, Josh finds out what lily pollen does to a shirt, and nobody knows who orders the lily on the piano every year.

So they read every tag against the list, faster and faster, until one line is left without a check. Jim, who carried in every pot and has hardly said a word, has known for a while. What Lorraine does about it is quick, with no ceremony, and the skit ends quietly on 1 Corinthians 15:20: Christ risen, “the firstfruits of them that slept.”

It fits an Easter program, Easter morning before the sermon, or a service where your church remembers those who died this year. Five adults and one rehearsal, with real or silk lilies from your own Easter order. The staging notes cover who the jokes are about (never grief or the people remembered), borrowing a few real dedications from your own lily list, and casting Jim as an older woman.

(LORRAINE points at each pot as she counts. DOUG counts along under his breath.)

LORRAINE: …forty-four, forty-five, forty-six.

DOUG: Forty-six.

NANCY: (checking the bulletin) The bulletin says forty-seven.

LORRAINE: The florist said forty-six. I said forty-six. The lilies say forty-six. Somebody counted wrong.

NANCY: The bulletin's been proofread three times.

LORRAINE: By who?

NANCY: Me.

LORRAINE: Last year the bulletin had Easter on a Tuesday.

NANCY: That was the office.

LORRAINE: Doug. Count again.

DOUG: (pointing fast) …forty-five, forty-six, (pointing at the piano) forty-seven!

NANCY: Forty-seven!

LORRAINE: That's the piano.

DOUG: There's a lily on the piano.

LORRAINE: That's the piano's lily. It's there every year. Nobody knows who orders it. We don't count it.

NANCY: Somebody pays for it every year. Cash. No name.

LORRAINE: We think it's the piano tuner.

(JOSH and JIM come in, each carrying a pot. JIM sets his down and quietly turns it so the flowers face out.)

LORRAINE: Trumpets facing out, tags facing front, and nobody touches the pollen. Jim, is that the last of them?

JIM: That's all of them.

(DOUG leans over a lily and sneezes into his tissue.)

THE OTHERS: (without looking up) Bless you.
