About the skit

Tyler has been lying under a sheet on the youth group’s “tomb” since nine-fifteen, or so he says, and he has to stay still until the very end of the service. Brenda has two pages of announcements, front and back. Earl needs the tomb moved six inches to get to the ham, the lost and found has eleven umbrellas and one left shoe, and Sophie the angel has been ready since February.

Then Brenda gets to the prayer requests, and one of them is for someone sitting right up front. Tyler does the one thing he was told not to do, and an angel who was told exactly when to say her line does exactly what she was told. It lands on the angel’s words from Matthew 28:6 and a hymn the whole church sings.

It goes late in your Easter service, in place of your real announcements, and ends inside your closing hymn; it also works near the end of an Easter program. Six people and one rehearsal, with Brenda and Ms. Kim reading from their pages. The staging notes cover keeping Tyler a teenager and never Jesus, seating Joan where the room can see her face, and running Sophie’s cue until she waits for it.

BRENDA: Good morning again, and happy Easter! Before our youth group finishes its Easter play, just a few announcements.

(The sheet on the tomb shifts.)

TYLER: (a loud whisper from under the sheet) Ms. Kim.

MS. KIM: (whispering) What, Tyler?

TYLER: Is it time?

MS. KIM: Not yet.

TYLER: I've been in here since nine-fifteen.

MS. KIM: You're in a tomb, Tyler. Be in a tomb.

TYLER: How long are the announcements?

MS. KIM: Brenda has two pages.

TYLER: Front and back?

MS. KIM: Front and back.

BRENDA: First, parking. If you're parked across the back driveway in a silver SUV, you have blocked in the entire choir. The choir would like to go home eventually.

SOPHIE: (practicing under her breath) "He is not here: for he is risen—"

MS. KIM: Not yet, Sophie.

SOPHIE: I'm practicing.

MS. KIM: You say it when Tyler gets up. Not before.

SOPHIE: When Tyler gets up.

TYLER: You ready, Sophie?

SOPHIE: I've been ready since February.
