About the skit

It’s the evening of the day He rose, and four disciples are huddled on a bench when Jesus stands among them. Nobody plays Him: He is the empty space in front of the bench, and the narrator gives His answers straight from Luke 24. The disciples scream, argue about who said “ghost,” and the hungry one would really rather not share what’s in the basket.

Later, on a mountain in Galilee, the questions come faster (“Is there fish there?” “How many is ‘all’?”), until the quietest disciple, silent the whole time, steps forward with the one grown-up question. The answer is Matthew 28:20, and the last lines tie it back to the forty days of Acts 1:3.

Four children (6–11) and a narrator, about four minutes, and one walk-through. It fits Sunday school, children’s church or a kids’ moment in the weeks after Easter. The staging notes cover keeping the empty space clear, timing the fish laugh, what the narrator does when a child freezes, and a version for three children.

(The DISCIPLES sit huddled together on the bench, heads close, mouthing words without a sound. The NARRATOR stands to one side.)

NARRATOR: After Jesus rose from the dead, the Bible says He was "seen of them forty days." Forty days. And His friends had a lot of questions. (beat) That Sunday evening, the day He rose, His friends were gathered together, talking about Him, when "Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you."

(The DISCIPLES scream and jump up. All four stare at the same empty spot right in front of them.)

DISCIPLE ONE: (hiding behind DISCIPLE TWO) It's a ghost!

DISCIPLE TWO: (to the empty spot, shaky) Are You… a ghost?

NARRATOR: Jesus said, "Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have."

DISCIPLE TWO: (to DISCIPLE ONE) He said "handle me." Go touch Him.

DISCIPLE ONE: You touch Him!

DISCIPLE TWO: You said "ghost"!

DISCIPLE ONE: You said "ghost" too!

NARRATOR: "And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet."

(The DISCIPLES go quiet. They lean in and look at the empty spot, low, where hands would be.)

DISCIPLE THREE: (softly) It's really Him.

DISCIPLE THREE: (brightening, to the spot) Do You still eat? Like, now?

NARRATOR: "And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?"

DISCIPLE THREE: Meat? We don't have any meat.
