About the skit

Today’s audition is for a very big part: the main symbol of Easter. Bunny is early (very early), and his résumé just says “hop.” Hen brought a sample egg; it’s plastic, because the real ones kept breaking. Chick is cute and knows it, Basket Kid says there’s no Easter without a basket, and Butterfly used to be a caterpillar. At the end of the row, a lamb who got there first just waits.

Then the Casting Director uncovers requirement number four, and the room empties fast, with one honest goodbye from Butterfly. What’s left is the quiet lamb and Isaiah 53:7, read from the clipboard and explained in words a six-year-old can follow, with one last laugh from Bunny before the bow.

It fits the children’s moment on Easter Sunday, an Easter program or Sunday school. Five to nine children, no child’s line over eleven words, and one teen or adult with a clipboard; send the lines home a week ahead and rehearse once. The staging notes cover why the Lamb is a sign and not Jesus, the poster strip that has to come off in one pull, and which parts to cut or add.

(The LAMB sits in the last chair at the end of the row, hands in lap, waiting. The CASTING DIRECTOR steps up to the poster and faces the congregation.)

DIRECTOR: Hello, everybody, and thank you for coming to today's audition! We're casting a very big part: the main symbol of Easter. (points at the poster) Number one. Must be on time.

(BUNNY zooms in, runs one fast lap around the DIRECTOR and skids to a stop.)

BUNNY: I'm early!

DIRECTOR: We haven't started.

BUNNY: I'm very early!

DIRECTOR: (reading the poster) Number two. Must be good with kids. Number three. Must look nice in spring colors. (calling toward the side) Okay, everybody! Come on in!

(HEN, CHICK, the EXTRA CHICKS, BASKET KID and BUTTERFLY come in and sit in the row, next to each other. BUNNY can't sit; he bounces beside his chair until the DIRECTOR gives him a look, then sits and jiggles.)

DIRECTOR: First up. Bunny.

BUNNY: (handing over a résumé) I'm fast. I hide eggs. I hop.

DIRECTOR: (reading it) "Hop. Hop. Hop. Hop." This whole page just says "hop."

BUNNY: It's my best thing.

DIRECTOR: And where are you in the Easter story? The one in the Bible.

BUNNY: (thinks hard) Is there a part with hopping?

DIRECTOR: No.

BUNNY: Then I'm hiding. I'm really good at hiding.

DIRECTOR: (writing it down) "Hiding." Thank you. Hen!

HEN: (standing up proudly) I lay eggs. Real ones. (She hands over the plastic egg.) Here's a sample.

DIRECTOR: (looking at it) This one's plastic.

HEN: The real ones kept breaking.
